MECHANIC FALLS – The Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult and Community Education fall program is under way. The Learning Center is accepting new day and evening students for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and GED testing. Call the adult education office at 345-3217 or e-mail [email protected] for more information about these classes and for classes that are offered at Minot Consolidated School.

General interest classes being offered include:

Heartsaver AED taught by Wayne Cotterly: The program provides students with training in the performance of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on adult and child victims (no infant). Students will receive a Heartsaver AED course completion card upon successfully completing the course requirements, which include skills testing. The course is physically demanding.

Cost includes all materials required. The one-day class will be held Monday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 9, Monday, Jan. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Monday, March 16, from 6 to 9, at Poland Community School. Registration is $45/$50 Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident. A minimum of three people is needed.

SCORE Workshop: SCORE, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, provides free information and advice on practically every conceivable business. Workshops will be held Wednesdays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19 and Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Poland Regional High School. A minimum of six people; registration, $40/$45 Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident. Registrations must be paid by Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Standard First Aid with Wayne Cotterly: The purpose of the one-day course is to teach lay responders the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives.

Students will be required to pass written and skills tests. Upon successfully completing the course, students will receive a first aid course completion card. Cost includes all materials. It will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15; Monday, Feb. 2; and Monday, April 6, at Poland Community School. A minimum of three; registration, $50/$55, Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident.

Fitness for Life with Deb Conway: Class features step aerobics and resistance exercises to tone and strengthen the entire body. Teens are welcome with an attending adult.

Registration: Thursday, Oct. 30, 6 to 6:20 p.m. at Poland Community School; $25/$28, Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident. Class begins at 6:30 p.m. Six-week sessions will continue throughout the school year. When school is not in session, classes will not be held. A minimum of six people is needed.
