BETHEL – The third-ranked Telstar boys’ soccer team was taken to school Wednesday afternoon in a Western Class C quarterfinal playoff game.
Senior Josh Bloom scored two goals and added an assist in leading No. 11 Waynflete to a 4-0 upset victory against Telstar between snow flurries and chilly conditions.
The Rebels knew they couldn’t afford to take the lower-seeded Flyers for granted. Waynflete had upset Wiscasset in the preliminary round. The reason became evident early on when Waynflete’s style of play dominated with precision and skilled passing.
“We got beat by a better team,” Telstar coach Tim Remington said. “I’ve never seen a better 4-7-3 team. They were able to pass around, and we got caught back and then just looking at the ball.”
Telstar opened against the wind, but held on throughout most of the first half as goalie Joel Putnam (11 saves) stepped up to make several basket catches. Rebels defenders Patrick Gallagher, Dan Vaughn and sweeper James Kimball were able to clear shots away.
Waynflete broke the ice by scoring two goals in the latter stages of the first half. Daniel Mitchell received a crossing pass from Hasson Jeylani and beat Putnam. The pressure continued when Bloom dribbled in on the right side and booted the ball in to the left corner.
“We wanted to attack from the wings outside and in,” Bloom said. “The team is jelling at the right time and the communication between us on the field helps.”
Waynflete advances to play St. Dom’s in the semifinals Saturday.
“That was the best half we’ve played this season,” said Waynflete coach Brandon Salway, a Bethel native who played for Telstar assistant coach Bob Remington. “I didn’t think we’d have anything to show for it, but the first goal allowed the team to relax.”
The Rebels boot-and-run style had forwards Frankie DelDuca, Ben Cross, Ethan Morin and Deagan Conrad constantly chasing after loose ball that ended up being intercepted by the Flyers defense. The best opportunity occurred when Conrad booted it to the middle and Morin headed it over, but Cross’ shot went wide left.
The Rebels had seven shots in the closing minutes, but couldn’t get the ball past Waynflete goalie Chris Gillespie.
“They forced us to (alter) our game plan,” Remington said. “We tried a few things and Frankie tried a couple things, like cheating back in an attempt to offset their passing. Finally, I had to move every one up because it didn’t matter how many goals they had, if we couldn’t score.”
Bloom and Robin Wajler each scored midway through the second half.
