YMCA swim classes to begin week of Nov. 3

AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA has announced that its next session of swim lessons will begin the week of Nov. 3.

The YMCA offers the following classes: Parent and Tot, ages 6 to 18 months; Water Babies, 18 to 24 months; Tiny Tots, ages 2 to 5; youth progressive lessons, age 6 and up; and adult swim lessons. All YMCA swim classes run in eight-week sessions.

Parent and Tot is a 30-minute class designed to introduce infants to the water. A parent is required to participate. Class is scheduled for Wednesdays at 9 a.m. or Saturdays at 8:30 a.m.

Water Babies is a 15-minute class catering to the timid new swimmer and has a 1:1 child/instructor ratio. Classes are held once a week, Mondays at 10 a.m.

The Tiny Tot program is geared toward teaching children to swim and feel safe in and around the water. All classes run for 30 minutes. Lessons are offered Friday morning, Saturday morning, or Monday evening. Advanced Tiny Tot classes are held on Monday at 7 p.m., Thursday at 1 p.m. or Saturday at 10 a.m.

Youth progressive lessons are designed to improve swimming skills, teach new skills, endurance and stroke techniques and survival skills. Children will be placed in a class based on their swim abilities.

Classes are 45 minutes, and the schedule is as follows: Polliwog or Guppy, Tuesdays at 6 p.m., Thursdays at 4:15 p.m. or Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.; Minnow, Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. or Thursdays at 5 p.m.; Fish, Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m., Thursdays at 5 p.m. or Saturdays at 11:15 a.m.; Flying Fish and Shark, Saturday at 11:15 a.m.

Class size is limited, and registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must be YMCA members. A yearly membership for ages 5 and under is $25; a youth membership is $50 for kids ages 6 and up. All the classes have a $55 program fee.

Adult swim lessons are offered Wednesdays 6 to 6:45 p.m. for beginners and Wednesdays 6:45 to 7:30 p.m., advanced. Non-members must pay a $25 membership fee. Participants must pay the $55 program fee for the eight-week session.

The YMCA is also holding registration for the Silver Sneakers silver splash and water exercise programs. Silver Splash offers shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance and is held Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

An interactive water exercise class is a lower impact cardiovascular workout for adults of all ages on Monday and Friday from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Both are free for those with a full privilege membership. Nonmembers must pay a $25 membership fee and a $65 program fee.
