PORTLAND (AP) – Ten women from the Middle East are wrapping up a visit to Maine as part of a program sponsored by the State Department to encourage women to play a greater role in politics in their own countries.

The women attended briefings this week on Maine government and politics. They visited the campaign office of Sen. Susan Collins and met with representatives of a political training group for Democratic woman. Wednesday’s schedule included meetings with social studies classes at Cape Elizabeth High School.

The program began more than two weeks ago with a series of seminars in Washington, D.C. The 10 women now fly to Seattle to observe the final days of the campaign in Washington state and watch the results of the voting on Tuesday.
