JAY – Paul Gilbert, a Jay Democrat, took his hometown of Jay by a vote of 1,834-841 over fellow Jay candidate Angela Courchesney, a Republican, in state House District 87 race.

That district serves the towns of Chesterville, Jay, Mercer, New Sharon and Starks.

Results from the remaining towns were not available late Tuesday.

Gilbert is retired and has been involved in municipal government since the 1960s serving in appointed and elected positions.

“I believe in public service and I believe in the people of Western Maine. We are honest, hard-working and we need to be represented in Augusta.

His top legislative goals are health care, energy and jobs, which are the most pressing items on people’s minds in this district, Gilbert said.

“I have always worked to bring people of differing opinions together to find common solutions of benefit to the people we service. I will continue to do this in the Maine Legislature,” Gilbert said.

Courchesney, senior at the University of Maine at Farmington, also works part-time at Hannaford.

“I want to serve the people of Maine,” Courchesney said. “I believe I can make a difference.”

Her top legislative goals are to work to bring businesses back in to boost the area employment and, thus the economy, she said.
