POLAND – The second time was the charm as voters overwhelmingly approved the town’s first charter by a vote of 2,147 to 749 on a special ballot cast Tuesday.

The charter question originally went to voters at the June primary election and while it passed by a similar percentage, not enough voters turned out to make the vote legal and binding. By law, 705 voters (30 percent of the turnout in the last gubernatorial election) were required and fewer than 600 actually cast votes in June.

Tuesday’s turnout, large due to the presidential election, showed the charter has broad and strong support.
