ALFRED (AP) – An Old Orchard Beach man awaiting trial for the murder of his mother, stepfather and brother has been indicted on a felony charge of aggravated criminal mischief.

According to York County District Attorney Mark Lawrence, Matthew Cushing is charged with tampering with the sprinkler system in his York County Jail cell in September.

Police say Cushing has admitted to fatally stabbing his mother and stepfather, Carol and Christopher Bolduc, and his 15-year-old stepbrother, Josh, and then setting fire to their house in Old Orchard Beach on Feb. 20.

Court documents indicate that Cushing, who was taking time off from the University of Maine, was angry at his parents for not funding a backpacking trip to Europe.
