LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) – There was a tasty race for the Colorado senate when voters got to choose between Bacon and Fries.

In the end, Bacon won.

Democrat incumbent Bob Bacon defeated Republican challenger Matt Fries on Tuesday 63 percent to 37 percent to represent the district that encompasses most of Larimer County in northern Colorado.

“I am so pleased that the voters appreciate the work that I have done,” Bacon said

Bacon originally was elected to the seat in 2004 after serving three terms in the state House of Representatives.

Fries is a long-time education advocate.

Retiree banks on Obama editions

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) – A Washington state retiree is making a $5,000 bet that Barack Obama’s election will lead to prosperity.

Sixty-seven-year-old Thomas Baldwin bought 10,000 copies Wednesday of The Bellingham Herald’s election wrap-up edition.

The front page carries a photo of the Democratic president-elect and the headline “Obama wins.”

At 50 cents a copy, it cost Baldwin $5,000. But he thinks he could net a profit someday if the paper becomes a collector’s item.

The Herald still had the plates for the publication when Baldwin called and was able to fill his special order.

Stick gets into Toy Hall of Fame

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) – The lowly stick could be a magic wand, a knight’s sword or a fishing rod.

Now the universal plaything has landed in the National Toy Hall of Fame, along with Baby Doll and the skateboard.

The three were chosen Thursday to join the lineup at the Strong National Museum in Rochester, N.Y.

Previous inductees include the bicycle, Mr. Potato Head, Crayola crayons and the cardboard box.

Curators say the stick is a special addition. They praised its all-purpose, all-natural, no-cost qualities. They also noted its ability to serve either as raw material or an appendage transformed by a child’s imagination.
