LEWISTON – Yannick Riendeau has never been shy about shooting the puck, especially against the Lewiston Maineiacs.
The 20-year-old Drummondville sniper capped a stellar goal-scoring weekend in Lewiston with a hat trick to lead the Voltigeurs to their second consecutive lopsided win over the Lewiston Maineiacs on Sunday, a 7-1 decision, in front of 2,089 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
“He’s a top 20-year-old in the league,” Drummondville coach Guy Boucher said. “He’s a skilled kid, but he’s a gritty kid, too, and most of his goals come from the battle areas.”
Riendeau, who previously skated with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, has seven career goals and 14 points against Lewiston in his career.
“He’s a smart hockey player and a good power-play player,” Maineiacs’ coach Ed Harding said.
Lewiston helped Riendeau’s cause all night, too, by putting the Volts’ power play on the ice eight times, including twice with a two-man advantage and once for a four-minute stretch.
“When you put a team like that on the power play, and especially on a 5-on-3, you’re in trouble,” Harding said. “We have to be better on special teams. The whole team has to take a bit more pride in that aspect of the game.”
Things started off much better Sunday than they did Saturday for Lewiston, but deteriorated quickly in the latter half of the opening frame.
“We played better,” Harding said. “We had our footing for a while, and we got off to a great start. We outplayed them 5-on-5. But then Billy Lacasse takes a penalty, we’re going to kill it and Eric Gelinas takes another one. Then we’re in trouble.”
Mike Hoffman blasted a slap shot past Delmas at 8:09 of the first with the Volts on their first of two extended power plays.
With 2:12 to play in the first, Hoffman and Dmitri Kulikov assisted on Riendeau’s first strike – again on the power play – to push the Drummondville lead to 2-0, and Samson Mahbod found the score sheet with 45 seconds to play in the opening frame for a 3-0 Voltigeurs edge.
“Their philosophy is to shoot the puck, but to be smart about it,” Harding said. “If they don’t have their shot, they’ll shoot it hard off the back boards and work hard around the net to try and generate some opportunities.”
Drummondville didn’t let up in the second period, either. An interference call to Danick Paquette gave the Volts their fifth power play of the game, and though they didn’t score during the ensuing power play, Riendeau netted his second of the game five seconds after it expired with a patient deke down low on keeper Peter Delmas to push the lead to 4-0.
Mathieu Gingras made it 5-0 with a tip-in at the 10:37 mark of the second, on the first face-off after the media timeout.
The Maineiacs did stave off another Drummondville 5-on-3 in the latter stages of the middle frame to keep the score at 5-0.
In the third, Riendeau capped his hat trick at 7:33. Garrett Clarke managed the Maineiacs’ lone goal at 11:34, and the Volts’ Gabriel Dumont finished Lewiston off with his third of the season at 12:50.
Lewiston next skates on the road, beginning a four-game trek Friday in Drummondville before heading to Rimouski next Sunday for a matinee with the Oceanic.
