LEWISTON – Police are investigating a vandalism spree during which windows were smashed out of nearly a dozen cars and trucks parked in the neighborhoods around Central Avenue.

An estimated $20,000 damage was caused when the culprits smashed out windows and used some type of tool to dent or rip into vehicle bodies.

It was believed the wave of vandalism occurred between Sunday and Monday. By Wednesday, at least 10 people had reported damage from hurled bricks and bottles as well as other types of mischief.

On Champlain Avenue, one vehicle owner found a rear window completely smashed out and a thin, straight line sliced into the roof. It was not known what type of device was used to hack through the roof of the vehicle, though police believe it may have been a bladed tool.

Nearby, on Russell Street, a vodka bottle was hurled through a car window. Not far away, another window was smashed out of a car and a brick was found nearby.

A rock was blamed for a smashed window on Main Street, and on Montello Street, a vehicle sustained $5,000 in smashed windows and dents.

Police believe the incidents are related and surmise that the suspect was driving in their own vehicle when they targeted parked cars and trucks.

Around the same time, there were similar reports in areas away from the Central Street neighborhood, such as the smashing of a Ford Bronco window on School Street.

Police were investigating to determine how many vehicles were struck during the rampage. Early estimates placed the damage between $15,000 and $20,000, and that estimate was expected to rise.

By Wednesday night, no arrests had been made although investigators were pursuing leads. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lewiston Police Department at 513-3139.
