DIXFIELD – L/A Junior Bassmaster angler Brian Volkernick, 13, recently competed on Geary State Fishing Lake in Junction City, Kan., the Junior World Bassmaster Championship.

Volkernick advanced to the JWC by winning the Junior Bassmaster Eastern Divisional tournament with two bass weighing over 5.5 pounds on Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H., back in September.

In the 11-14 age division of the JWC, the six-angler field battled 30-degree temps and windy conditions with gusts up to 25 mph, and water temperatures that dropped over 20 degrees in two days. All anglers in the classification were unable to bring any legal catches to the scales.

The six contestants will divide $11,000 in scholarships, with each angler earning just over $1,800. Just one legal fish bought to the scales would have also netted the winner a fully rigged Triton/Mercury Alliance boat package.

Volkernick mentioned that he had a great time and can’t wait to return. He also wishes to thank his family, friends, teachers, bass clubs and all those who supported him in his quest to win a world championship.
