LEWISTON – “Godspell,” the rock musical that imparts the teachings of Jesus with an endearing comic twist, is coming to the Franco-American Heritage Center. The St. Dominic Regional High School Drama Society last performed “Godspell” 7 years ago, and will perform this unique retelling of the gospel according to Matthew on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28-29 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m.

A talented cast of ensemble players tells familiar biblical parables in a series of skits that possess a child-like irreverence and wry humor, yet evoke the poignancy of Jesus’ sacrifice. First performed off Broadway in 1971, “Godspell” was conceived by John Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics – those not supplied by the New Testament – by Stephen Schwartz.

The show conveys the message, “love thy neighbor,” and then tells the audience how to do just that. The music draws from rock, folk, country and pop genres. The music is being performed by a group of talented musicians from the school who add their own emo-rock feel to the songs. The production also premieres an additional song written by Saint Dominic’s alum and composer Paul G. Caron.

The ensemble cast features students from both St. Dominic’s and Trinity Catholic. The cast includes John Winter as Jesus, Delton Hulbert as John the Baptist/Judas/Peter, Bethany St. Hilaire, Maisy Cyr, Sarah Small, Kaitlin Haskell, Emily Albert (TC), Catie Skaleski, Jeffrey McDonald (TC), Jacob Weeks, Matt Lamare and Pablo Barajas. This diverse cast brings their own personalities to the characters, enhancing the stories and songs.

Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and students. Tickets may be purchased at the door, reserved through e-mail at noel.thibodeau@portlanddiocese.org or by calling the Drama Society at 782-6911 ext. 3222. The Franco-American Heritage Center is located on the corner of Cedar and Oxford streets in Lewiston, and is wheelchair accessible. The parking lot is located directly across the street from the center.
