These are not the best of times for the Lewiston Maineiacs.
The Gatineau Olympiques continued their turnaround after an 0-13 skid with their third consecutive victory Saturday night, rattling off six goals before Lewiston could catch its breath in a 6-2 win over the visiting Maineiacs in front of 2,543 at the Robert Guertin Centre.
“It was very discouraging,” Maineiacs’ coach Ed Harding said. “We have gone over all of this stuff until we’re blue in the face.”
Lewiston has now lost five of its last six games, and in all five losses, the Maineiacs have allowed six or more goals, and opponents lit the lamp 41 times in all.
“We go over rotation and the special teams in practice all the time, and we have to be able to execute better,” Harding said.
In Saturday’s defeat, the Olympiques jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a two-man advantage in the first period. It was the lone goal of the opening frame, but it proved demoralizing to Lewiston.
In the second, after shooting 12 pucks at Gatineau keeper Maxime Clermont in the first, the Maineiacs couldn’t even muster a shot on goal.
The Olympiques, meanwhile, capitalized twice more, including another on the power play, to pull ahead 3-0.
In the third, Gatineau doubled its lead to 6-0 in the first 12:30, getting two goals from Maxime Mallette and another from Alexandre Quesnel.
In what amounted to garbage time at the end of the game, the Lewiston power play finally came through when Eric Gelinas notched his fifth of the season at 17:38 on a setup from Max Gratchev and Etienne Brodeur.
Billy Lacasse followed that with his ninth of the season at 18:52 to cap the scoring.
Peter Delmas started for Lewiston, allowing six goals on 25 shots before Philip Wright relieved him in the third period.
Lewiston has a short turnaround this week, and begins a stretch of games during which the Maineiacs play seven of their next nine on home ice, starting Wednesday against Shawinigan, and Friday against Acadie-Bathurst. Game time for both is 7 p.m.
