Swinging around from Main Street, Auburn, onto Court, at a rate which was fully up to the legal limit of eight miles an hour – perhaps some faster, Mr. E. C. True of Auburn tried to cut off a telephone post on the sidewalk Tuesday forenoon. The post still stands and the auto is in the repair shop. One wheel was smashed and the front of the machine looked like hard times. The owner’s only consolation is that the accident lays up the auto at practically the end of the season and that he himself wasn’t spilled out onto the street.

50 years ago, 1958

The new city directory for Lewiston and Auburn is off the press and runs true to form as far as family names are concerned.

The “Morin family,” in Lewiston is the largest with 247 entries in the new book, followed by the Pelletiers with 239 and the Ouellettes at 234.

25 years ago, 1983

Larry Charest, a rather prominent figure in Lewiston hockey history, made a return to Central Maine Youth Center Friday in the official capacity of assistant to Coach Peter Hanson of the Brunswick High Dragons. Larry was long a leading Lewiston hockey exponent as a player and player-coach when he led the Bates Co. Fabrics to a National Senior championship, and he later directed St. Dom’s to New England titles and most recently coached two of the L-A Twins most potent senior clubs.

• Eastern Supply will present Socolor at the December meeting of the Lewiston-Auburn Cosmetology Association Tuesday at Bernard’s School of Hair Fashion in Lewiston. A color advisor from Matrix will present a color class for local hair dressers at 7 p.m. All cosmetologists and hairstylists in the area are welcome.
