Quick service is the motto of the Auburn Police Department.

Shortly after noon yesterday police received a call from a 12-year-old Nova Scotia girl who said her wallet had been stolen from her tourist room.

Police Captain Steven Smyc and Patrolman Leonard Johnson visited the youngster and determined the wallet contained $10 in bills and some change. Proceeding in their investigation in a methodical manner, the officers quickly solved the mystery, much to the red-faced embarrassment of the young lady. They found the wallet in the pocket of her jacket.

The chance to win a free Cabbage Patch Kids doll drew hundreds of people to an Auburn store Sunday, some arriving hours before the first drawing and remaining there all day.

“There was quite a crowd,” said K-Mart worker Marcia Strout. “There were probably 100 to 150 people standing around the service desk until the last drawing. A lady I know … had been here the entire day.”

K-Mart began raffling off the dolls, one every 15 minutes, at about 12:15 p.m. But according to Ms. Strout, “There were people here as early as 10:00 a.m..”

Mad scrambles for the dolls, which have caused a nationwide sensation, have resulted in injuries and melees at several locations across the country.
