PORTLAND – For better than two periods, despite the apparent disadvantage in the standings, the Lewiston Maineiacs had a chance to pull a second upset of a top-ranked team in as many weeks.
The real Quebec Remparts showed up – briefly – in the third period, just long enough to put a damper on the Maineiacs’ first showcase game at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Dmitri Kugryshev had two goals and two assists and Marc-Olivier Vallerand added a goal and a helper to lift the Remparts to a 5-2 victory over the Maineiacs in front of 2,371.
“Overall I’m pretty satisfied,” Lewiston coach Ed Harding said. “The team was prepared, and I think the team played really hard. Quebec is a good hockey team, and for the fans, I think it was a pretty good hockey game to watch.”
“Lewiston worked hard and they played a good game,” Quebec coach Patrick Roy said. “They beat Shawinigan last week 9-3, so we knew we had to be ready for them. When you play any team on the road, you have to respect them.”
The Maineiacs railed by a goal early in the second, and evened things at 2-2 at 3:09 of the final frame when Billy Lacasse tipped home a shot from the point on a power-play face-off in the Quebec zone.
“We did a real good job to get it tied up, 2-2,” Harding said. “We made a couple of critical mental mistakes (Friday).”
Enough was enough for Patrick Roy’s squad.
At 8:58, Kelsey Tessier pounded a rebound home at the left post past a prone Peter Delmas to put his team ahead by one, and Kugryshev added the dagger at 10:02 with another marker from in tight.
Delmas stopped just 24 of 29 shots he saw in the loss, as Kugryshev finished things off with a breakaway goal in the final minute.
“He had to make a few big saves,” Harding said of Delmas. “I think he’s coming around. I think he’s battling harder, he’s working harder, and he understands that. There’s some light at the end of the tunnel.”
Roy’s son, Jonathan, earned the win for the Remparts with a 22-save effort.
The teams played a mundane first 10 minutes, with neither wanting to give away too much skating room. Lewiston opened it up a bit through the middle part of the frame, which led to a few more outside shots from the Remparts.
The only power play of the period – in favor of Quebec – produced the game’s first goal. Samuel Carrier fired a sharp-angled rebound past Delmas from the goal line at 14:30 to put his team ahead, 1-0.
Max Gratchev responded for Lewiston with 1:41 left in the first. On a rush through center, Gratchev outran the rest of his line. He circled back, let his linemates crowd the crease and snuck a low snapper through the gaggle of feet in front and into the lower left corner of the net.
The Remparts didn’t waste much time breaking the tie in the second. Delmas struggled with a wobbling puck, leaving the rebound at the top of his crease. Three players – two from Quebec and one Lewiston defenseman – crashed the net, and the puck bounced past Delmas to put the visitors ahead 2-1.
The rest of the second period was choppy, with neither team able to move the puck effectively for long periods of time. Lewiston had a pair of power-play chances in the middle part of the period, with no positive results.
“We had our chances,” Roy said. “For example, (Sebastien) Trudeau missed an open net on one shot. We have to bear down on our chances, that’s something we haven’t done.”
The same two teams face off Saturday night at 7 p.m., again at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
