NORWAY – Fernando A. Navarro, M.D., a general surgeon with Western Maine Surgery, recently received a three-year appointment as cancer liaison physician for the accredited cancer program at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Cancer liaison physicians are an integral part of cancer programs accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Navarro has been a medical staff member at SMH for three years and has significant interest in patients with a possible diagnosis of a malignant disease, and uses up-to-date surgical interventions when necessary to treat cancer for area patients. He is a member of the SMH multidisciplinary cancer committee.

Navarro is among 1,600 volunteer physicians who are responsible for providing leadership and direction to establish, maintain and support their facilities’ cancer programs.

Navarro graduated from Medical School at Escuela Comobiana de Medicina in Columbia, South America in 1996. From 1999 to 2001 he was a research fellow at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, he then completed his internship in general surgery at Boston University Medical Center. His residency in general surgery was at Maine Medical Center in Portland from 2002 to 2006.

In 2007 he became board certified in general surgery.

Navarro resides in Norway with his wife and their son.
