ORONO – Tanner House and Brian Flynn each notched a goal and an assist as the University of Maine downed Union College 3-1 in men’s hockey action Friday evening.
The Dutchmen (8-6-1) struck first at 8:58 into the first period when Stephane Boileau fed a pass to the blueline that teammate Lane Caffaro fired into the back of the net.
But, the Black Bears (9-5-1) evened the score less than four minutes later. Will O’Neill ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that House redirected to Flynn, who was stationed on the left post for the power-play goal.
House padded the lead to 3-1 in the second period by positioning himself on the weak side of the goalie, converting a relay from Gustav Nyquist and Flynn.
Southern Maine 4, Salem State 3
SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore forward Zach Joy netted the game-winning goal at 15:04 of the third period as the University of Southern Maine slipped away with a 4-3 victory over Salem State College in men’s ice hockey action Friday evening.
The Huskies (4-4) jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on a power play goal from sophomore defenseman Paul Conter and an even strength tally by Joy.
The Vikings (3-4) battled back to tie the contest on two ocassions as Mike Genovese evened things up at 3-3 with a tally at 13:48 of the third period.
Goalie James Lacour, who was making his first collegiate start between the pipes, made 23 saves for Salem State. Jamie Gilbert of Lewiston earned the win with 32 saves for Southern Maine.
