PARIS – A 47-year-old Oxford man has denied stabbing a man last summer.

Steven Ray Piirainen of Coldwater Brook Road entered not guilty pleas in Oxford County Superior Court to charges of aggravated attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault. He is accused of stabbing 44-year-old Steven Toothaker of Oxford five times on June 9 at a King Street apartment building where Toothaker was visiting friends.

Piirainen is free on $150,000 worth of property.

According to police reports, Piirainen demanded money from Toothaker and attacked him when he said he did not have any. Toothaker was stabbed in the neck, shoulder, arm and abdomen and walked to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for treatment. He was later taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The indictment states that Piirainen intended to commit murder. It also cites as an aggravating factor Piirainen’s conviction for aggravated assault in Androscoggin County in January 2004.

In that incident, Piirainen and another man were accused of assaulting a man in his Auburn apartment, robbing him of marijuana and cash, and leading police on a high-speed chase in 2003.
