NEW YORK (AP) – Foiled by fruitcake!

Competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi tried to set a new fruitcake-eating record on Friday, but the dense cake did him in.

Kobayashi, known for his hot dog-eating prowess, was trying to eat at least four pounds, fourteen ounces of fruitcake in 10 minutes to break a 2001 record. He came up just short, at four pounds and eight ounces.

Kobayashi, who admitted he had never eaten fruitcake before, said the density was a problem.

The charity event was a fundraiser for the Food Bank for New York City.
