POLAND – Joe Murphy led a balanced attack with 12 points to lead Poland to a 47-40 triumph over Freeport.
Freeport (1-6) took a 13-11 lead after the first quarter, but Poland (2-6) outscored the Falcons 24-11 over the middle two frames to take control.
Mike Littlefield chipped in with 10 points for Poland, while Jonah Farrington added eight points and Kevin Payette seven.
Jon Klages scored a game-high 20 points for Freeport.
Elan 73, Buckfield 64
BUCKFIELD – Elvis Rueda scored 31 points to lead Elan to a 73-64 victory over Buckfield in a Class D boys’ basketball game on Saturday.
After opening a 12-9 lead after one quarter, Elan erupted for 28 points in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 40-28 at the half. The lead grew to 20 in the third quarter before the Bucks (1-5) made a brief run in the final frame.
Jack Peters added 24 points and Jordan Vachon had 11 for Elan. Tyler Weymouth and Kyle Rines led Buckfield with 25 and 23 points, respectively. Bryan Litchfield chipped in with 13 points.
Wiscaset 59, Mountain Valley 53
WISCASSET – Senior guard Jason Dennison posted 18 points in a balanced attack as Wiscasset sailed to a 59-53 victory over Mountain Valley in MVC boys’ basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Redskins (6-1) jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter, an advantage that made all the difference in the final analysis. Senior guard Nick Hinkley tallied 12 points and eight assists for Wiscasset.
Sophomore guard Cameron Kaubris scored a game-high 22 points for the Falcons (6-1), while senior forward Matt Laubauskas chipped in with 10 points in the losing effort.
Yarmouth 58, St. Dom’s 37
YARMOUTH – Senior guard John Murphy had a stellar performance with 28 points to lead Yarmouth to a 58-37 victory over St. Dom’s in WMC boys’ basketball action Saturday.
The Clippers (6-2) took control of the game in the third quarter with a 20-11 run.
Senior guard Greg LaBonte led the Saints (3-3) with 15 points, while Aaron Allen posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Winthrop 71, Telstar 65
BETHEL – Senior guard Zach Farrington drained a game-high 25 points to lead Winthrop to a 71-65 triumph in a competitive matchup over Telstar in MVC boys’ basketball action Saturday.
The Ramblers (7-0) witnessed a 15-point lead dwindle to just five points in the fourth quarter, but held on to remain undefeated on the season. Senior forward Andrew Smithgall contributed a handsome 24 points for Winthrop.
Junior guard Joel Putnam scored a team-high 23 points for the Rebels (1-6), while Ben Field chipped in with 16 points and Dan Vaughan added another 11 points.
Hockey
Poland/Gray-NG 7, Deering 5
HEBRON – Seth Champagne and Ben Piper scored two goals apiece to lead Poland/Gray-New Gloucester to a 7-5 victory over Deering in a boys’ hockey game Saturday.
Following a scoreless first period, the Patriotic Knights scored four consecutive goals en route to a 6-1 advantage midwat throught eh final period. Deering (0-6) scored three goals in the final six minutes to make it close.
Chris Lessard chipped in with a goal and two assists. Joey Davie and David Provencher also scored for Poland/Gray-NG (5-1). Goalie Nick Ouellette stopped 18 of 23 shots.
Ben Rodick scored twice for Deering.
St. Dom’s 8, Portland 2
PORTLAND – Senior defenseman Richard Paradis scored two goals and added three assists to lead St. Dom’s to an 8-2 triumph over Portland.
The Saints (3-2) spaced out their scoring evenly, netting three in the second and third periods. Senior forward C.J. Bergeron and freshman forward Nate Bergeron recorded two goals apiece for St. Dom’s.
Bronson Guimond cut the Bulldogs’ deficit in half with a late first period goal, but the game went downhill from there for Portland. Sam Guimond recorded two assists.
