YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) – A new survey says many Americans are engaging in risky behavior, ranging from speeding on the roads to leaving stuff on the stairs.

The New York-based Consumer Reports magazine says a random telephone survey of 1,000 people finds 70 percent never wear ear protection while operating gas-powered mowers or leaf blowers. Fifty percent don’t always completely stop at stop signs.

Seven in 10 respondents admitted speeding. And more than a third said they leave items on the stairs.

The survey released Monday says 58 percent never wear a helmet while bicycling and 27 percent never use sunscreen.

On the other hand, only 9 percent don’t look at the warnings that come with drug prescriptions. And just 13 percent say they read or send text messages while driving.
