AUBURN – The wild and wacky world of that-team-beat-this-team-and-this-team-beat-that-team continued Thursday, proving once again that the transitive property of mathematics hold absolutely no weight in the world of sports.
Edward Little erased the memory of a stunning home loss – its first three years – to Morse less than one week ago, and dispatched a team Thursday that had recently defeated the Shipbuilders to keep the revolving door atop the KVAC spinning.
Corey Therriault drained six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points, Shane Ciriello added 14 and five boards and James Philbrook netted 10 points and hauled in six rebounds to lead the Red Eddies to a 69-44 win over Mt. Ararat on Thursday.
“They didn’t shoot against us like they did against Morse on Tuesday,” EL coach Mike Adams said. “Partly was a cold shooting night for them, I’m sure, and partly it was because of our defense. We attacked the offensive glass hard on our end to give ourselves second-chance opportunities.”
Edward Little dominated the boards early, getting second- and third-chance baskets with regularity through the second quarter.
“They out-rebounded us 20-8 in the first half, and they had more offensive rebounds, nine, than we had total rebounds,” Mt. Ararat coach Aaron Watson said. “You’ can’t hope to beat a team with numbers like that.”
The fact that the Eddies were getting that many looks at all was also a point of consternation for the Eagles. Plain and simple, their defense wasn’t working.
“We did not defend nearly to the level that we need to defend at,” Watson said. “That’s on me, I guess. We have to do something different on defense.”
The Eddies’ embarrassment of riches in the size department was apparent all night, too. Mt. Ararat struggled to find rebounds as EL’s front court guarded the rim.
“We have a big team,” Adams said. “We’ve always had a lot of guards, but not much size, but we’ve said, from Day 1, ‘You watch, one of these years we’re going to be big all the way across.’ They’re all pretty good athletes, too.”
“They just kick our butts in terms of boards and physical-ness,” Watson said. “They wanted the loose ball or the rebound a heck of a lot more than we did.”
And it wasn’t just a few players hitting baskets for EL: Nine different players hit for at least two points.
Mt. Ararat, meanwhile, struggled to find its stroke. Cam Vermette led the way for the Eagles with 15 points, and was their only player to reach double digits. Mike Donahue-Hanscom was close with eight on three field goals and a pair of free throws.
EL raced out to a 9-0 lead in the opening quarter, and it took the Eagles 5:57 to score their first basket. The Eddies went on a 7-2 run to open the second, and closed the first half on a 10-1 run to pull out to a 35-15 lead.
Both teams scored 14 in the third as the game opened up a bit, but Therriault and the Eddies put the hammer down in the fourth, hitting for 20 points to seal the victory.
