RAMAPO, N.Y. (AP) – A county just north of New York City has been fined $12,000 for unsafe conditions at one of its nursing homes after a closet fell on a nun and killed her.

Rockland County must pay the state $10,000 for failing to secure the 200-pound freestanding closet that toppled over and crushed Sister Mary Daniel at the Summit Park Hospital and Nursing Care Center last year. It must pay $2,000 for failing to take action after two similar incidents before the 90-year-old nun’s death.

The state Department of Health says it’s unacceptable to have conditions that would result in serious physical harm to a nursing home patient.

The Rockland executive says the county agreed to the penalty and is working to improve safety at the nursing home.

The nun’s family has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the county.
