PARIS – An 84-year-old man who pleaded guilty to sex charges on Monday will not have to serve jail time if he abides by terms set in court.

O.B. Willie Rose, of Roosevelt, N.J., pleaded guilty to four counts of Class C unlawful sexual contact in Oxford County Superior Court. The charges were amended from Class A and B felonies.

Rose was indicted in November 2007 on four counts of Class A gross sexual assault, nine counts of Class A unlawful sexual contact, and one count of Class B unlawful sexual contact. He was accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl between August and September 2007, after briefly moving to Rumford.

Justice Roland Cole accepted a plea agreement giving Rose a two-year deferred disposition. During that time, Rose must have no contact with the victim, her family, or any children under the age of 16. If he successfully completes the disposition, Rose may withdraw his plea to the felonies and plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful sexual touching.

Cole said Rose could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison if he violates the agreement. Rose will not have to register as a sex offender under the deferred disposition.

Assistant District Attorney Joe O’Connor said the girl’s family “reluctantly” supported the plea agreement due to the uncertainty of a trial. Defense lawyer Margot Joly said Rose had been prepared to go to trial but recognized that he could have been found guilty if a jury believed the girl’s testimony.

The girl’s family had asked to be heard at the plea. The girl appeared before Cole with a written statement, which her mother read.

“I now know that you can’t hurt me anymore,” the statement read. “I never, ever want to see you again in my life. … You’re disgusting and I hope you rot in stinking hell.”

Turning to face Rose, the girl’s mother continued with her own statement, accusing Rose of attempting to turn the girl against her family and bribe her so she wouldn’t speak about any sexual misconduct.

“Our daughter is a very strong, brave, and courageous little girl for telling us and the police that you were raping her,” the mother said. “There is no forgiveness now or ever for what you have done to our daughter.”

Rose is living in a senior housing facility in New Jersey. He is free on personal recognizance bail and the conditions of the deferred disposition.
