LEWISTON – It took a Grover Slam to dislodge Lewiston High School’s distinction as the final unbeaten team in girls’ hockey.
Biddeford sophomore Sara Grover scored two even-strength goals, a short-handed tally and an empty-netter Monday afternoon at Androscoggin Bank Colisee, staking the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Blue Devils in a possible preview of next month’s inaugural Maine Principals’ Association state championship game.
Jenna Roy set up a pair of goals for Biddeford (13-2-1). The other two were unassisted wizardry off the stick of Grover, who continues to make her case as Maine’s premier girls’ hockey player in this maiden season of varsity competition.
Grover also scored four goals here against St. Dom’s and has celebrated six other hat tricks against Gorham and Cape Elizabeth (both twice), Portland and Falmouth.
“Today was her day. I think she likes playing in this venue, which is a good thing,” said Biddeford coach Marie Potvin. “This is where the playoffs are. She’s come in here twice and had huge games.”
The Tigers, last year’s Tier I club state champion, avenged an earlier 7-3 loss to Lewiston (11-1-1). Biddeford, winner of six straight games, is ranked No. 1 in the West conference. Lewiston stands atop the East by a wide margin.
“I’m still shaking right now. It’s quite a win,” Grover said. “Before the game our coaches were talking about how it was probably a bigger game than Cheverus, because last time (Lewiston) beat us. This time we brought it to them.”
Biddeford set a different tempo early in the rematch when Grover cashed in a feed from Roy at 4:32. Freshman Marisa Zamrock provided Lewiston’s answer 43 seconds later, Courtney Vallee assisting, but the Devils gave up the go-ahead goal despite a 5-on-3 advantage with 10.9 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Grover swiped the puck at center ice, whooshed between two defenders and deposited the puck just underneath the crossbar.
“She’s an excellent, excellent hockey player,” Lewiston coach Ron Dumont said of Grover. “She skates well. She sees the ice well. She actually of all the kids I’ve seen is the most complete, because she makes people around her better. She moves the puck a lot. We have to learn how to contain her the best we can.”
The last minute of the middle stanza was equally disheartening for Lewiston. After Biddeford won a faceoff in Lewiston’s defensive zone, Grover broke free in the slot and stuffed home her own rebound with 29 seconds remaining.
Both Lewiston goaltender Stephanie Belanger and Biddeford counterpart Brandee Leclair played brilliantly in a free-wheeling second period, combining for 26 saves prior to Grover’s breakthrough.
Leclair finished with 26 stops. Belanger turned away 19 shots. Defensive captain Olivia Gagnon was a disruptive force throughout for the Tigers.
“The defense from Brandee on out, they did some nice things all day,” Potvin said. “They had something to prove after the first game, and I think they came out and did that today.”
Lewiston couldn’t take advantage of a 9-3 shots advantage or two more power plays in the third period. Grover punctuated her personal highlight film by filling the empty cage from 50 feet away with 11 seconds remaining.
The Devils fought until the horn, as evidenced by Vallee’s goal with help from Katie Cobb in the closing seconds. It was Lewiston’s third contest against a top-flight foe in six days, on the heels of a 3-3 tie with Winslow and a 6-1 triumph over St. Dom’s that was tougher than the scoreboard conveyed.
“You pick up and keep on rolling. You don’t make excuses. It isn’t like we have been in the doldrums for six weeks,” said Dumont. “The bottom line is they’re high school kids, and I’m the coach, so the onus is on me to get them ready mentally from the word ‘go.’ Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. (Biddeford is) a great hockey team, and you need to bring it early or you’re going to get in trouble.”
