CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will present the Tannahill Weavers, one of Scotland’s premier traditional bands, Tuesday, Feb. 3, at The Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center and Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Lakeside Theater in Rangeley.

Both concerts are at 7 p.m. There will be a preshow jam session at 6:15 p.m. at Skye when audience members are urged to bring instruments and jam for a few minutes with the artists.

The Tannahill Weavers’ diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people.

These versatile musicians have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and recording efforts.

“The Tannahill Weavers, properly harnessed, could probably power old-time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock ‘n’ roll,” it was written in the Winnipeg Free Press.

Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland, and named for the town’s historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the group has made an international name for its special brand of Scottish music. Over the years, the band has been a trailblazer for Scottish music, and its tight harmonies and powerful, inventive arrangements have won over fans from beyond the folk and Celtic music scenes.

“Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric. The quintet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock ‘n’ roll intensity or haunting introspection,” according to a review in The Boston Globe.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Call New England Celtic Arts at (207) 562-4445 or Lakeside Theater at (207) 864-5000. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and U.S. Route 2. Lakeside Theater is on Main Street in Rangeley.
