LEWISTON – What a difference a day makes.

Three different Victoriaville skaters scored, and Antonio Mastropietro followed a forgettable, five-goal loss with a masterpiece, stopping all 34 shots he faced to lead the Tigres to a 3-0 win over the Lewiston Maineiacs in front of 2,737 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday.

Mastropietro was less than stellar in the Maineiacs’ 7-2 victory Friday, allowing those seven goals on just 27 shots. But the 1991-born goalkeeper, making his 13th consecutive start in relief of normal starter Kevin Poulin, rebounded well.

“He was sharp,” Victoriaville coach Yannick Jean said. “Our goalie coach worked well with him (Friday) night, and he played very. very well.”

“Our guys thought they were going to fill the net tonight,” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “They thought it was going to be points night at the Colisee, and their goaltender was quite determined that it wasn’t going to be. I thought he was tremendous.”

The Tigres offense started slowly, enjoyed most of its success in the second and backed off a bit in the third while protecting a lead. But it was consistent.

“It wasn’t the start we wanted,” Jean said, “but we came back after, closed the middle better. They got a lot of shots on net, but they were mostly from the outside.”

Lewiston’s offense, meanwhile, peppered Mastropietro in spurts. But the Maineiacs couldn’t solve the rookie netminder.

The Maineiacs took it to the Tigres early, registering the first 10 shots on goal, including several on a few early power plays.

“We had a great start,” MacAdam said, “but we had two or three guys who had just abysmal games. Our power play, which was so good (Friday) night was so terrible (Saturday) night, we got a shorthanded goal scored against us, and we had a five-minute power play where we got two shots on goal in five minutes.”

Former Halifax Moosehead Chad Earle lit the lamp at 17:50 of the first frame, capping a short flurry for Victoriaville with a backhander that beat a lunging Peter Delmas 5-hole.

Victoriaville found its groove early in the second, too. Keven Dupont fired a slap shot from the left point through traffic and past Delmas to put the visitors on top 2-0, and Maxime Tanguay added a short-handed tally at 5:23 of the second to push the lead to 3-0.

Lewiston peppered Mastropietro to close the second, and even had a full five-minute power play to work with. But the Maineiacs squandered that chance, too.

Victoriaville fell back on defense in the third, content to allow the Maineiacs expend all of their energy trying to play catch-up.

“We wanted to keep them off a bit,” Jean said. “We rotated only five defensemen all night, and with two games in two nights, we were trying to save some juice.”

The Maineiacs will play their next five games on the road, beginning Wednesday in Val d’Or. The team’s next home game is Wednesday, Feb. 18 against league-leading Moncton.
