BRUNSWICK – One Red Eddie followed another as the top finishers for the girls’ triple jump was announced Friday night.
By the time all the slots were filled on the podium, the Edward Little girls’ track team had five of those positions. It was an exclamation point on a convincing win for EL at the KVAC meet. It was the first KVAC meet victory for EL since 2004.
“It’s amazing,” said EL coach Rebecca Hefty. “The last time we won this, it just wasn’t the same. We had a couple of horses on our team. When you lose a Lindsey Visbaris, who scored 40 points in every meet, it took us three to four years to build up everywhere else.”
EL utilized its strength in numbers and dominated numerous events at Bowdoin College. The Red Eddies finished with 136 points, breaking Brunswick’s run of four straight titles. The Dragons were second with 107 followed by Mt. Ararat with 93 and Lewiston at 58.
“As long as I’ve been here, we’ve never won the KVAC’s,” said Emily Dodge. “I think going into it we had a good feeling because we have such good unity this year.”
In the boys’ meet EL was second to Brunswick for the sixth straight year. The Dragons had 218.5 points while EL had 126.5. Lewiston with third with 99 followed by Mt. Ararat with 69.
Dodge led EL with wins in the hurdles, long jump and triple jump, but it was the depth of EL’s scoring that made their victory so resounding. There were five events in which EL had three or more in the top six.
“We did that in the triple jump,” said Hefty. “We did that in the hurdles, the long jump, the shot put and the pole vault.”
EL entered the meet with 26 girls slotted in various events. The Red Eddies hope was to take advantage of those numbers.
“Coming in we were ready to show what we had,” said Josie Lahey, who was second in the shot. “We’ve worked so hard all year. We knew we had the opportunities, but it’s about what happens here.”
In the triple jump, Dodge took first while Chyla Hiott was second. Ashten Hackett, Jessica Nyholm and Muriel Schwinn followed in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Behind Dodge in the long jump, Schwinn was third followed by Nyholm in fourth and Katherine Harmon in sixth. Dodge, Hiott and Hackett took the top three spots in the hurdles. In the pole vault, Danielle Paul was second followed by Lauren Bennett in fourth. Audrey Bennett was sixth. Paul also took third in the 800 and the mile.
In the shot put, Lahey was second. Harmon took fourth and Diana Kruszewski was sixth.
“We scored an extra point than we were supposed too,” said Lahey. “That’s always good. We came in third, fourth and fifth, and we got second, fourth and sixth. We’re all happy with that.”
EL got a third and fifth in the two mile from Hannah Hart and Stephanie Elwell. Schwinn added a fourth in the 55 meter dash.
“We had 26 girls in the KVACs,” said Dodge. “That’s never happened to us at all before. Especially in the technical events like jumping and hurdling, we’ve done a lot of work and recruited a lot of underclassmen.”
The EL boys got a win from Josh Clark in the pole vault. His distance of 13-6 was a new personal best and rebroke the school record. Jon Ford took second in the event for EL.
Jake Dubois repeated in the shot, taking the KVAC crown for the fourth straight year.
“You definitely have to meet the goals of what you’re expected to do,” said Dubois. “I had a season PR which is great, a 47-8. I didn’t throw as far as I’d have liked, but I was happy with it.”
Brandon Gruver took second in the hurdles. Chris Caiani was second in the 800 while Buddy Foss was third in the 55 meter dash. EL also scored with a fifth from Faisal Noor in the two-mile and a sixth in the high jump from Alex Clark.
Lewiston’s Toby Crispen won the two mile to lead the Blue Devils.
“I was expecting to be totally dead after the mile,” said Crispen. “Last year in the states, I ran a good mile, but I was totally dead after the two-mile. I ran a good mile tonight, and I wasn’t totally dead.”
She added a second in the mile.
“I PR’d in the two mile and I PR’d for the season in the mile,” said Crispen. “So it was a good day.”
The Lewiston girls also got a second from Lea Morin in 55 meter dash and the 200. Joy Harrington placed fifth in the 800, while Maame Bonsu was fifth in the long jump. Carly Yeung added a fifth in the shot.
Also in the girls’ meet, Mt. Blue’s Melody Lam took fourth in the 800 and fifth in the mile.
Among the Lewiston’s boys’ top finishers, Matt Driscoll took third in the mile and second in the two mile. Abdinoor Hassan was tied for third in the hurdles while Tyler Roy took fourth in the shot. Cam Fillion had a sixth in the 400, and Hussain Ibrahim took sixth in the two mile.
