PARIS – A 36-year-old Jay man has been indicted on arson and burglary charges related to a Canton fire that occurred last May.

James D. Burnell, of Intervale Road, was charged with Class A arson and Class B burglary in connection to a May 19 fire that destroyed a cabin and some woodland property belonging to Donald and Shirley LeSuer of Jay.

Firefighters from Canton, Jay, Dixfield, Peru and Sumner responded to that blaze off Meadow View Road.

Burnell was sentenced in Franklin County last month after pleading guilty to stealing two trucks from Verso Paper in Jay on the evening of May 19.

While driving a stolen Verso dump truck, Burnell took down power lines and generators and knocked out electricity to Jay, Dixfield and Canton.

Burnell had been imprisoned since his arrest. After pleading guilty to charges of aggravated criminal mischief and unauthorized use of property in the Verso truck incident, Burnell was ordered to serve two years in prison.
