By the peach fuzz on their chinny-chin-chins, the Lewiston High School Blue Devils avoided a second-round matchup with No. 1-seed Waterville in the Eastern Class A boys’ ice hockey tournament.

In Western A, St. Dom’s earned its highest seed in a while at No. 4, and in Western Class B, the Leavitt Hornets finished, well, right about where they thought they would.

The Maine Principals’ Association released the final boys’ hockey Heal Points on Wednesday, setting the brackets for the final postseason tournament of the winter season.

St. Dom’s battled through a tough and very deep Western Class A to finish fourth in the state’s largest conference, one place ahead of Scarborough, which the Saints swept this season.

“From the beginning of the season, we had a goal to finish in the top four,” St. Dom’s coach Steve Ouellette said.

With so many teams in Western A, there are several preliminary games scheduled for this weekend, but thanks to earning the fourth seed, the Saints will avoid a preliminary matchup. Scarborough, the No. 5, will take on No. 12 Bonny Eagle (5-12-1), the winner of which will get St. Dom’s next week at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“It’s definitely a good thing to be at home the whole way,” Ouellette said. “We still have some things to work on, but it’s nice that we have a little break, too.”

Gorham, a surprise team to many this season, earned the top seed in Western Class A thanks in large part to a softer schedule. The Rams earned 17 wins in 18 games playing a Tier II and Tier III schedule. They’ll face the winner of No. 8 Biddeford, the defending state champion, and No. 9 Westbrook in the Western quarterfinals.

Thornton Academy and Falmouth earned Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

In Eastern Class A, Lewiston finished at No. 3, one-tenth of a point in front of Bangor. That allows Lewiston to avoid No. 1 Waterville in the Eastern semifinals, should the Devils advance past Gray-New Gloucester/Poland, which drew No. 6.

“Our goal was to finish first, but when it became obvious that it wasn’t possible, we definitely wanted to come in third,” Lewiston coach Jamie Belleau said. “Still, we can’t take any team below us in the standings lightly. Any team with 13 wins is a team you have to be careful of, I don’t care what their schedule looked like.”

The Patriotic Knights played a mixed schedule to reach those 13 wins. They’re excited to have another crack at Lewiston.

“We were hoping it would work out this way for a couple of reasons, the first being we really didn’t want to have to travel to Bangor,” Gray-NG/Poland coach Aaron Rand said. “Also we played them earlier this year and we know what they’re about, and we’re excited about the opportunity.”

Waterville lost just once this season and earned the top seed in Eastern Class A, while Brewer finished second at 14-3-1.

The Class A tournament runs through St. Dom’s and Lewiston’s home rink this year, too. In years past, the regional finals have been contested at the Cumberland County Civic Center. But this year, all rounds of the Class A playoffs beyond the regional quarterfinals will be at the Colisee in Lewiston.

In Class B, Leavitt drew Cape Elizabeth in the Western Class B semifinals. With just six teams in the region, the top four made the playoffs. Top-seeded Greely will play York, and both games will be at Portland Ice Arena, the Capers’ home rink. The Western B final is in Lewiston.

“We have to make sure we stop making stupid mistakes,” Leavitt coach Ron Rouillard said. “That’s how Cape has beaten us both times.”

In Eastern B, John Bapst capped its season with a No. 1 seed. Gardiner finished second, with Winslow in third and Presque Isle in fourth, setting up another potential clash between rivals Gardiner and Winslow in the regional semifinals.
