LEWISTON – A teenager who hurled a flaming shirt beneath a truck on Walnut Street late Wednesday night has been charged with arson.

Police said the 14-year-old local girl was arrested after she was questioned by detectives and a fire inspector.

The 11:15 p.m. incident burned the hands of a man who removed the shirt from beneath his car parked on Walnut Street. Police said some of the burning cloth melted into the man’s skin. He was treated at Central Maine Medical Center and released.

Investigators said the 14-year-old was walking on Walnut Street when she rolled up a piece of cloth, doused it in men’s cologne and set it on fire. She hurled it into a lot filled with parked cars, but the fire went out.

Police said the girl tried a few more times with the same results. The last time she flung it beneath a car the shirt stayed lit, police said.

It had not been determined why the girl allegedly started the fire. She was taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.
