In like a lion, out like a lamb.
The old saying has held true about March weather for a long time.
But what if, like the Lewiston Maineiacs on Sunday, March comes in like a lamb?
Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
In the team’s final regular-season road trip, and with a busload of fans in the stands, the Maineiacs fell flat for a second consecutive day in a 7-2 loss to the Montreal Junior in front of 2,720 at the Verdun Auditorium.
“Our top guys were just worn out,” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “We tried to spread things out a bit in Saturday’s game to make sure we were rested for (Sunday), but we had nothing left in the tank.”
The Maineiacs complete their road schedule at 9-24-1-0, winning five road games before MacAdam took over, and four (plus an overtime loss) since.
“We had five wins in 24 road games when I got here,” MacAdam said, “and we had four and a half, I suppose, in the last 10. I’m not absolutely thrilled, but you can’t be really disappointed, either.”
The Maineiacs are 12-17-0-1 at home, and will finish what appears to be their final season with four home games over the next two weekends.
Sunday’s game began innocently enough. At one point in the opening period, the Maineiacs had nine shots to Montreal’s five, and a few great saves by Junior goalkeeper Jake Allen were all that stood between Lewiston and a 2-0 or 3-0 lead.
“Some people would say he’s the best goalie in the league,” MacAdam said. “He’s an excellent goalie. We actually might have created more scoring opportunities (Sunday) than in our two previous games combined.”
But the home team rallied around its goaltender. In the second, the offense took over.
Darick Ste-Marie and Matthew Brenton scored goals seven seconds apart early in the second, and Nick Layton added another just 1:11 after that, leading Montreal to a four-goal period.
Awestruck, the Maineiacs called timeout, but that served only to slow the Junior down. Dmitri Kostromitin blasted his first of two on the night past Adrien Lemay (34 saves) later in the second to make it 4-0.
Alex Beaton put Lewiston on the board off a faceoff late in the second, but Guillaume Asselin and Kostromitin added two more in the third to slam the door shut on a comeback.
Etienne Brodeur earned his 10th of the year and Asselin knocked in his second of the game later in the final frame to cap the scoring.
Allen finished with 31 saves for Montreal.
Lewiston has home games this week on Friday against PEI and Sunday against Shawinigan.
