LEWISTON – All season, St. Dom’s flew up and down the ice, scoring neary six goals per game – even, sometimes, in defeat.
This time, in front of nearly 3,000 people, on the team’s biggest stage of the season, depth and defense did the trick for the Saints.
Shayne Curtis stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced, Casey Parker potted a pair of goals and Spencer Teixeira added another to lead St. Dom’s to a 3-1 win over Falmouth in the Western Class A regional final at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Tuesday.
“Shayne stepped it up tonight,” St. Dom’s coach Steve Ouellette said. “He faced 14 shots, which means the defense in front of him was playing great, obviously, but he had to make some glove saves tonight that were just fantastic. He was up and down quickly, too. He showed what we knew he had in him tonight.”
Curtis, whose goals against average going into Tuesday’s matchup was 3.18, felt it early.
“We played well defensively, first of all, which kept the shots down,” Curtis said. “I was able to see the puck, they did a good job clearing out the front, and I saw the puck clean the whole game.”
After an adjustment during the first intermission, the Yachtsmen (14-7-0) started shooting lower.
“Early in the game, I thought we got the puck a little too high,” Falmouth coach Scott Rousseau said. “In the second, we got the puck into his pillows a bit more, but the puck never really kicked to our guys. It goes like that sometimes in hockey.”
All-state forward Mike Chase, who’s led Falmouth all season at both ends of the ice, appeared frustrated at times, unable to get into open space.
“Part of that came from our play in our own end,” Rousseau said. “We had to work so hard in our own zone that it was hard to get out into space. St. Dom’s is the fastest team, by far, that we’ve seen all year.”
On the other end, similar frustration. The Saints spent a lot of time in the Falmouth zone, but didn’t have many shots to show for it as the teams battled through a pair of scoreless periods.
“I was getting worried after we got through two periods,” Ouellette said. “The last thing we wanted was to go into an overtime tied 1-1 against this team.”
St. Dom’s opened things up in the third, and it was a pair of players who’ve flown a bit under the radar who kick-started the Saints.
Trevar Haefele lost the puck on a hit in the right circle, but bounced to the front of the net as Spencer Teixeira picked up the loose puck and fired it on net. The shot beat Falmouth keeper Jay Hurdmann blocker side to put the Saints on top, 1-0.
“We were inconsistent with three lines all night,” Ouellette said. “As long as the lines keep producing and playing like they did tonight, we keep playing them. Haefele had a great game on both ends of the ice. he was up and down the ice all night, and did a lot of the little things in front of the net. Lately, we’ve had our big power play guys getting a lot of the credit, and tonight we showed some depth.”
Casey Parker, one of those players who has been making waves lately, tipped a Cam Brown shot from the left point past Hurdmann at 10:54 of the third to put the Saints ahead 2-0.
Dixon Pike tightened things back up with 1:02 to play with a power play tally on a shot from the left point, but Parker finished the Yachtsmen off with an empty-netter at 14:19.
St. Dom’s, with 24 state title in town, will face Waterville (which has 19 of its own) on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Colisee in the Class A state championship game.
