STRONG – Voters here will head to the polls from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Forster Memorial Building to elect two selectmen, a school board director and three members of the Budget Committee.

Selectmen Clyde Barker and Rupert Pratt seek to keep their seats on the board but are being challenged by Rebecca Croteau, who resigned from the board early in 2008 due to health reasons, said board Chairman Clyde Barker.

Two candidates want a three year SAD 58 director’s position. Incumbent Ann Schwink is opposed by Andrew Pratt II.

Budget Committee members Lois Barker, Scott Dyar and Eloise Stevens are rerunning unopposed, Barker said.

Raylene Tolman will serve as assistant clerk and run the polls Friday since town clerk Lois Barker and her assistant, Stevens, are running for re-election on the Budget Committee.

Town meeting will reconvene at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Forster building.

The proposed budget is about $9,000 more than this year’s, Treasurer Sandra Howard said, at $525,518.48.

The town will carry over a balance of $72,658 and voters will be asked to use $385,000 from surplus to reduce taxes.

The Budget Committee recommends reducing a few amounts, including funds to support the library, Barker said. The committee recommends cutting the $9,288 requested to $7,000. The funds cover a salary and telephone bill.

“As far as I’m concerned, the library is a big asset to the town,” Barker said.

The Budget Committee also recommended reducing requests from the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce of $1,500 to $100, and the American Red Cross from $1,232 to $400, and the United Methodist Economic Ministry request for $1,250 to $1,000, he said.

Roger Lambert will serve as moderator for the meeting Saturday. A dinner provided by the Methodist church women will be held at noon, he said.
