WELLS (AP) – A catalog and direct marketing printer in southern Maine is shutting its doors because of bad economic conditions, putting 374 people out of work.

RR Donnelley & Sons Co. announced Wednesday that it would close the former Spencer Press facility in Wells by the middle of June, with the first job losses to start in early May.

RR Donnelley, based in Chicago, said layoffs will be staggered and employees will be offered severance packages. Spokesman Doug Fitzgerald said the closure is a result of “this unprecedented economic environment.”

RR Donnelley, a publicly traded company, acquired Spencer Press in 2005. It is the largest employer in Wells.
