Late last night officer McGillicuddy found two young fellows about 16 years of age walking along lower Main Street and the boys appeared to be having a fine time both for themselves and causing considerable merriment to all who saw them. Investigation showed that the boys had painted their faces in the manner such as clowns in the circus are painted and were walking on the streets to show themselves off. They were taken to the police station and after a sound lecture were sent to their homes.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department was authorized Wednesday to establish a basic reading and writing program for inmates at the County Jail. The County Commission approved the idea at its regular meeting Wednesday night, on the condition that the new program will not cost the county taxpayers any money.

The commissioners approved the idea after hearing a brief outline of the program from William Hayden, the jail’s alcohol and substance abuse counselor.

Since he has been at the Androscoggin County Jail, Hayden said, at least six inmates have expressed an interest in participating in a reading and writing program.
