AUBURN – A woman who told police she was robbed and stabbed on Friday night admitted the incident was a hoax, police said Sunday.

Authorities closed their investigation and stopped searching for a suspect in the Whitman Spring Road incident after the alleged victim admitted that her wounds were self-inflicted, Auburn police said in a news release late Sunday night.

The 23-year-old woman stabbed herself shortly before calling police at 10 p.m. Friday and reporting that she had been robbed and stabbed by a man who drove away in a black truck, a weekend investigation by Officer Bernice Mowatt revealed.

The victim was found inside her parked car near the gate at the closed end of Whitman Spring Road off North Auburn Road. The woman, whose name is not being released, was later treated and released from Central Maine Medical Center for minor stab wounds to her abdomen and upper arm.

Police have not decided whether to press charges against the woman.
