PARIS –  An inmate at the Oxford County Jail died after collapsing at the jail Wednesday, Sheriff Wayne Gallant said.

The 34-year-old man was not being immediately identified pending notification of his family. Gallant said the man collapsed at the jail from an apparent medical condition.

A Pace Ambulance crew was called and performed CPR on the man before transporting him to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway where he was prounounced dead by medical staff there.

Gallant said Maine State Police detectives had been called in to investigate the death as is protocol whenever a person dies in custody. He said assisting with that investigation were officers from the sheriff’s office.

The man’s body would be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Gallant said.

There was no apparent foul play involved and the death did not appear to be a suicide, Gallant said.
