WILTON – Shifts in the speed limit and the potential for development along a Route 2 and 4 corridor prompted the Board of Selectmen to meet with representatives from the Maine Department of Transportation on Tuesday.
The board agreed to draft a letter to MDOT requesting a speed zone review as advised by Stephen Landry from MDOT who met with the board.
The board had requested Landry to attend a meeting to discuss the potential and cost of a traffic survey done, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said Thursday.
The board wanted an area from the Indian Head in East Wilton to the Farmington town line considered. It has shifting speed limits that change from 40 to 50 mph in different places.
As vehicles come around the corner at the Indian Head heading east at higher speeds toward the intersection with Cemetery Road, it’s very dangerous, Selectman Russell Black said.
Irish has requested the speed zone review be extended from the intersection of Route 156 to the Farmington town line, she said.
The board’s questions centered on more than just the speed along the state highway. Board members and Tom Saviello were interested in future development of the area and concerned with limitations on the number of driveways or curb cuts allowed by MDOT.
There’s been some interest in a potential retail store, restaurant and parking area for Comfort Inn, Code Enforcement Officer Paul Montague said.
Saviello expressed concern that businesses might be interested in developing along the corridor, then find out they would need to consider a shared and expensive entrance and decide to move to another town.
An example of concern he raised was a state limitation that has already prevented one business owner from having a separate entrance for a building, available for lease, that he built next to his established business.
Landry thought the board was asking different questions requiring different studies. He encouraged the board to request the speed zone review through MDOT and then to contact Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments for a more detailed corridor study of lots and potential for development along the corridor.
