RUMFORD – The Mountain Valley Falcons’ offense proved to be effective and they received contributions from every player on their roster in a season-opening baseball game Monday afternoon.
Alex Gagnon had three hits and three runs batted in, and Brady Fergola hit a towering three-run homer en route to a 14-3 win against Georges Valley at sun-drenched Hosmer Field. The contest was halted after five innings when the 10-run mercy rule was implemented.
Class B Mountain Valley left little to the imagination after scoring 12 runs on 11 hits against two Georges Valley pitchers in the first two innings. The baseballs were carrying well in the wind and five Falcons had multiple hits and scored two runs each, including Gagnon, John MacKenzie, Garrett McPherson, Cam Kaubris and Ryan Laubauskas.
“This is a good way to start the (regular) season,” Mountain Valley coach Steve LaPointe said. “The kids hit the ball well and sprayed it around the field. They were aggressive at the plate.”
Mountain Valley delivered a message by scoring five runs after two outs in the first inning. McPherson led off with a single and Buccaneers starter Matt Shields retired two batters, but Ryan Laubauskas singled sharply to left field to open the flood gates.
Gagnon and MacKenzie each hit RBI singles. Tommy Puiia and Fergola (RBI) drew walks and No. 9 batter Gabe Salgalo hit a two-run double.
“We had a pretty good preseason,” Fergola said. “We did run out of pitchers, but the team has a entirely different mentally now. This is the regular season and every thing counts.”
Georges Valley appeared competitive by scoring two runs on one hit in the second inning. Brandon Knight singled and scored on a fielder’s choice, and Byant Matthews drew a bases-loaded walk. The Falcons’ defense forced two runners and eventual winning pitcher Connor Blais (three innings) stranded the bases full.
The Falcons had Gagnon and Fergola each pitch one inning in an attempt to find a solution. Base running and improper throws were also problem.s
“We still need to find a No. 1 pitcher,” LaPointe said. “That has been unanswered since we found out Matt (Laubauskas) can’t pitch (torn labrum) so, our rotation is uncertain at this time.”
Mountain Valley scored seven runs on six hits to put the game on ice in the second inning. Kaubris reached on a wind-blown fly and the Laubauskas brothers each singled. Gagnon hit a two-run triple and MacKenzie added an RBI-double. Puiia walked and Fergola deposited a pitch over the left-field fence. Kyle Dupuis doubled home a run in the fourth.
“The fast start definitely helped,” Gagnon said. “But we are not getting ahead of ourselves. It’s one game at a time at this point.”
