FARMINGTON – The Bates College baseball squad hustled to 15-1 and 5-4 victories over Maine-Farmington.

In the opener, the Bobcats (9-19) plated six runs in the opening frame and tacked on five more runs in the fourth on its way to a 15-1 rout. Brian Jenkins smacked a solo home run for the Beavers (4-21), while Mitch Bean and Josh Garneau each doubled.

Mike Cummei singled, homered and drove in four runs for the Bobcats. Rich Velotta singled twice and plated four runs, while Gordy Webb went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Karl Alexander hurled a complete game in the win with one walk and nine strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Tom Beaton singled home Tyler Maxwell in the sixth inning to lift Bates to a 5-4 win. Garneau singled, doubled twice and drove in a run for Farmington. Matt Judkins also contributed with two hits and one RBI.

Beaton finished with a three-hit day, while Cummei and Dave Farrell each ripping a single and a double. Chuck Murphy-Romboletti grabbed the win with two outs in relief.

Softball

UMF 4, Johnson State 1

FARMINGTON – Mckell Barnes clubbed a three-run walk-off home run in the seventh inning as third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington ousted No. 6 Johnson State (Vermont) 4-1 in the first round of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Softball Tournament.

With the game knotted at 1-1 after six and a half innings, Kasey McPhail was hit by a pitch and Erin Porter singled to set the stage for Barnes. The sophomore ripped her program single-season record 10th homer.

Liz Bergeron earned the victory for Farmington (15-11) with a complete-game effort. The senior tossed a three-hitter with four free passes and three strikeouts.
