The Sun Journal on Wednesday asked for opinions on gay marriage, which is proposed in Maine.

Joline Lacoste of Sabattus: Some gay rights would be OK, but marriage would be wrong. “I think it’s a big disappointment. We shouldn’t go there. That’s how God made it.”

Micheline Perron of Lewiston: Some form of union would be acceptable, but marriage should remain between a man and a woman. “They shouldn’t destroy what’s there. When you don’t qualify for something, you don’t apply for it.”

Kristi Morgan-Whiting of Fairfield: Raised to believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. But with loved ones who are gay and who deserve rights, “I feel very torn.”

Patience Baker and fiancé, George Bromiley, of Auburn: In favor of same-sex marriage.

“My mom’s gay and I think it’s great,” Baker said.

“I’m for it. As far as I’m concerned, when you’re in love with somebody, you’re in love with somebody,” Bromiley said.

Randi Bento of Auburn: The rules were made a long time ago and it’s time they were changed. Religion should be separate from marriage. “I think if you love someone, you should be able to marry them.”

Velvet Vachon of Lewiston: Depends on the people. “As long as they’re not bothering anybody, I don’t see why not.”

Jeffrey Bartlett of Lewiston: Same-sex couples should not be bothered, but they should not be allowed to marry. “It doesn’t seem ethical.”

Louise Chicoine of Lewiston: In favor of same-sex marriage. “People should be able to do what they want. How do you define love?”

Debate set to start

On Wednesday afternoon, legislation that would allow same-sex marriage in Maine was put on the Senate calendar for debate Thursday. Informal discussions by state lawmakers Wednesday indicated a first vote on the legislation by the Senate was possible by the end of the day
