NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (AP) – Seven New York police officers are being disciplined for poorly handling domestic violence calls to a woman’s home days before officials say her ex-boyfriend killed her.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey says two patrol officers have been reassigned to non-patrol jobs. Four other patrol officers and a supervisor have been transferred.
Mulvey says the officers didn’t identify witnesses or fill out enough paperwork when responding to domestic violence calls involving Jo’Anna Bird on March 15 and March 17.
Bird was stabbed to death at her New Cassel, N.Y., home on March 19. Her ex-boyfriend Leonardo Valdez-Cruz – who police say had defied court orders to stay away from her – is charged with killing her.
James Carver, who represents six of the officers, says they aren’t responsible for Bird’s death.
