NEW YORK (AP) – An early morning cab ride turned fatal for the driver.

Police responding to a crash scene just before 1 a.m. Sunday found a 37-year-old livery cab driver who had been shot multiple times while driving a passenger on Davidson Avenue in the Bronx. The vehicle had then crashed into the back of a Bronx school.

The driver, Roberto Pita, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police arrested the passenger, who was taken to an area hospital to be treated for face and hip injuries. They also recovered a firearm at the scene.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is holding a candlelight vigil for Pita on Sunday evening.
