RANGELEY – Police will hold an open house Saturday and will offer to fingerprint children and register bicycles in conjunction with National Police Week 2009.

“Come out and meet your police department, talk to us, see what we do and have a good time,” police Chief Dennis Leahy said.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. and run to 2 p.m., May 16, at the police station, located in the Rangeley Town Office Building. It is open to all those with a mail address or post office box in Rangeley and Oquossoc. Refreshments will be provided.

Police will fingerprint any child under the age of 12 that is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. These records will not be kept by the police, Leahy said.

“They will be given to the parent for their personal records,” he said. “These are a good thing to have in case of any emergency. Remember as the kids grow older, the faces may change, but the fingerprints will always stay the same. Any parent wishing to have their child fingerprinted must produce identification.”

Officers will register bikes, take photographs of them and put a numbered sticker on each one. This information will be kept in a database in case the bike is ever lost, stolen or destroyed, Leahy said.

There will also be a display of some of the tools used by the police, including police cruisers, bikes and radios.
