GARDINER – Oak Hill needs a signature win, maybe two, to reclaim its place in the Class B boys’ lacrosse tournament.

This wasn’t it.

Zoe Fisk, playing only his second game at attack after moving from goalkeeper to midfield for his senior season, fashioned four goals and an assist Tuesday in the Gardiner Tigers’ 12-1 rout of the Raiders at Hoch Field.

Kaleb Smith added three goals and Jake Wright two for the Tigers (7-2), ranked No. 3 in Eastern Maine.

“When we get into a groove, everybody becomes a threat and we hope to get the defense a little shaky,” Fisk said. “We’ve been able to move the ball around and been able to capitalize, and sometimes it’s me at the end finishing.”

Putting its proven backstop in the open field hasn’t weakened Gardiner’s defense.

Caleb Ross, also a senior, made 10 saves against Oak Hill, including a series of point-blank bids in the third quarter.

Ross left the game after Travis Dyer broke the shutout by finishing a scramble in front of the cage with 6:12 remaining in the fourth.

“I’m not really that great on one-and-one shots. I’m more comfortable if my defense keeps the guys out I can stop the shot,” said Ross. “We just recently moved (Fisk) down to attack. He makes us a lot better. He gets the ball moving around there.”

Smith’s second goal and Fisk’s first punctuated the first period in the final 56 seconds, giving Gardiner a 4-0 lead.

That advantage inflated to 9-0 at the half, largely on the strength of a natural hat trick by Fisk in a span of 4:34.

“He’s dangerous wherever you put him. We have a ‘D’ we can put on him that can take on any guy in the league, I think,” said Oak Hill coach Adam Dube. “We held Zoe to zero goals in the second half. We switched over to man defense, and that really kicked our ‘D’ into gear. That was great.”

Defense was generally the Raiders’ strong point on a day that produced minimal good cheer on the scoreboard.

Matt Averill, Tyler Michaud, Corey Stubbs, Tyler Gagnon and Will Aronson each broke up multiple shots for the Raiders (3-6). Caleb Fournier made 12 saves.

Many of those disruptions came early in the first quarter, before Terry Marks finally connected in the sixth minute to spark the Tigers.

“We didn’t move our feet at all. We didn’t pass the ball the first half,” Dube said. “We’re basically a second-half team, and that’s a day late and a dollar short. We need to get our feet moving in the first quarter.”

Kory Peckham and Nick Grover each added a goal and an assist for Gardiner. Alex Ferland posted a pair of assists.

Jake Usher and Tyler Salley were defensive stalwarts in front of Ross.

“Against Morse we had a really tough game. It was a lot of one-on-one shots for me,” said Ross. “We worked hard in practice, and today we were keeping them outside.”
