NEW YORK (AP) – The American Girl doll company is adding a new character to its multi-ethnic lineup.

The latest American Girl doll is Rebecca, a Russian-Jewish immigrant girl living on the Lower East Side in 1914.

Jewish leaders who have seen the doll and read the accompanying books say they are generally impressed.

Rebecca goes on sale May 31. She will join the company’s other dolls, such as Addy the escaped slave and Kaya the native American.

American Girl dolls cost $95. The company was bought by Mattel in 1998.
