GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) – A unusual chase near the Canadian border ended with authorities arresting a man after pulling him from the Niagara River.
The incident began early Saturday when Erie County sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance call on Grand Island and found an injured woman lying in the driveway.
They saw a car drive past the house, and when they tried to stop the driver for questioning, he refused and rammed his car into a patrol car.
The deputies said the man then drove to nearby Niagara Falls and abandoned his car.
Border patrol agents found the man in neck-deep water in the east Niagara River. He struggled with the officers who pulled him out.
Twenty-one-year-old Jon L. Battison was arrested on charges including driving while intoxicated and reckless endangerment.
