OXFORD – It’s not always the big guns who go home with the trophies.
For just the second time in his Late Model career, Jeff White had the field covered and hung to claim the trophy dash for the Late Models on Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.
White, of Winthrop, started fourth in a highly-competitive 21-car field, passed Gerald Parlin on lap five and went unchallenged the rest of the way.
“This car was destroyed last week,” White said. “My crew worked their tails off to get it repaired, and I sure appreciate their efforts. They made this win possible; they should be proud of how well this car ran. We held off one of the fastest cars out here, which is pretty tough to do.”
Tim Brackett was perhaps the most exciting to watch, as he wheeled his No. 60 entry up the outside lane through traffic. Brackett drove from 11th on the grid to third in 14 laps and ended up second. Pittston’s Tim Ashline took third for another podium finish.
Skip Tripp, Jimmy Childs, Troy Jordan and Ryan Farrar were also feature winners on a cloudy, but dry evening at the Western Maine oval. Track officials were hoping for a quick show with rain in the forecast, and the entire card ran off in two hours.
With no cautions to slow the pace, the Late Model feature race was over in a hurry. Parlin was gunning for his first career podium finish but settled for fourth, while Travis Adams completed the top five.
Finishing sixth through 10th in the Late Model feature were Doug Coombs, Corey Morgan, Shawn Knight, Donnie Wentworth and Kenny Harrison. Seventeen of the 21 starters finished on the lead lap, while White’s margin of victory was just over one second.
In earlier feature action, Mike Short appeared to make it two in a row in Strictly Stock action, but the driver was disqualified after failing a post-race inspection.
Short, a former champion from Auburn, started 11th on the 17-car grid, drove past Kim Tripp on lap 11 and easily pulled away from the field.
Kim Tripp pulled off the track with mechanical trouble at lap 24, allowing Skipp Tripp to secure second place before moving up to first after the disqualification. B.J. Chapman ran a clean race and was awarded second, while Tommy Tompkins made a successful return to Oxford in third. Jeff Merrill chased Kim Tripp up front in the early laps but was awarded fourth.
Farrar took advantage of John Lizotte’s first-lap slide up the race track in Turn 4 and drove away to claim the 10-lap Truck division battle. Lizotte recovered to finish second, while Jeff Schmidt was third. Herb Farrar and Kevin Oliver completed the top five.
Jordan took the lead from Derek Cook on lap 20 and hung on to prevail in a caution-free 30-lap tilt for the Rebel division. The driver from Turner was joined by two teammates in Victory Lane, with Matt Dufault second and Jason Berry third to make it an all-Turner podium. Charlie Webster and Gerard Cote finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in this entry-level class from Oxford’s Wednesday night Acceleration Series.
Childs barely held off Justin Karkos at the line to win a thrilling 30-lap contest for the Mini Stock division. The former champion (2006 and 2007) followed early leader Danny Morris the first 15 circuits before running out of patience. Childs nudged Morris up out of the groove coming off Turn 2 and drove underneath to take over the point. Since Morris didn’t actually spin out, officials saw no need to penalize Childs for the aggressive pass. Darrell Moore came from 10th on the grid to claim third at the finish, while Morris faded to fourth ahead of Larry Melcher. The Mini Stock warriors also went caution-free in their event on one of the cleanest race programs seen thus far in 2009.
“I have to thank my dad for working so hard on this car,” Childs said. “Yesterday was his birthday, so I told him tonight’s race was for him. That gave me a little extra incentive to win. I’ve been having issues with the engine timing, but we’ve got it worked out now. I hope we can keep running like this every week.”
